The French TV channel France 5 dedicates a week to food waste [Fr]. This is due to sensitize people as French people throw away a staggering 21 percent of the food they buy. What a shame !
This amounts to six million tonnes of wasted food, up to twenty kilograms per year per person. Supermarkets are playing a heavy role in this as they throw tons of food every single day.
This would be bad enough if everybody could feed themselves. But up to eight million people in the country are living below the poverty line…
of course the french or europeans in general do not throw as much as their american counterparts..still the tide of waste must be stemmed.
time to think about food as a valuable resource and pay attention to marketing habits..
Completely agree with you Nadine.
Food is now so cheap than people can afford to waste it without feeling bad about this…
