Despite all the gloom and doom of current events, there are reasons to celebrate, and to hope as the Montreal Protocol turned 25. This was at the time – and it still is – a huge success on environmental and climate issues.
Indeed, the World Bank noted that ” The Montreal Protocol, by controlling the consumption and production of these gases, has helped avoid 8 billion tons of CO2 per year – equivalent to the carbon emissions from some 1,900 power plants. “
A whole lot more needs to be done on climate if we want to avoid positive feedback mechanisms and an out-of-control climate, but the Montreal Protocol shows it CAN be done.
